Collection and recognition of children’s speech in the PF-Star project

This paper reports on the recording and planned research activities on recognition of children’s speech in the EU-project PF-Star. The task is quite more difficult than recognition of adult speech for several reasons. High fundamental frequency and formant frequencies change the spectral shape of the speech signal. Also the pronunciation and the use of language differs from adult speech. One ob...

Speech recognition and adaptation experiments on children’s speech

As a part of the EU project PF-Star a children’s speech database with speakers of the age of 4-8 years was recorded during 2003 at The Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm. In this thesis that database was used to investigate recognition of children’s speech and possible ways to improve recognition performance for children. Children’s speech were applied to both a recognizer trained with ad...

Recognition of read and spontaneous children's speech using two new corpora

This paper describes some of the results of research into automatic recognition of children’s speech which has been conducted as part of the European Framework 5 ‘PF STAR’ project. Two new corpora of British English children’s speech are described. The first comprises over 14 hours of read data from 159 children, while the second includes 1 hour and 23 minutes of spontaneous and emotional speec...

Improving Children's Speech Recognition Through Out-of-Domain Data Augmentation

Children’s speech poses challenges to speech recognition due to strong age-dependent anatomical variations and a lack of large, publicly-available corpora. In this paper we explore data augmentation for children’s speech recognition using stochastic feature mapping (SFM) to transform out-of-domain adult data for both GMM-based and DNN-based acoustic models. We performed experiments on the Engli...

Comparison of speaker verification performance for adult and child speech

Although speaker verification is an established area of speech technology, previous studies have been restricted to adult speech. This paper investigates speaker verification for children’s speech, using the PF-STAR children’s speech corpus. A contemporary GMM-based speaker verification system, using MFCC features and maximum score normalization, is applied to adult and child speech at various ...
